General
What is non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT)?
Non-emergency medical transportation, or NEMT, is safe, scheduled, professional transportation to and from medical appointments for patients who cannot drive and do not require an ambulance. NEMT covers wheelchair transport, ambulatory rides, gurney (stretcher) transport, and recurring dialysis rides.
Is DayLight Med Transportation an ambulance company?
No. DayLight provides non-emergency medical transportation only. An ambulance is for emergencies and carries clinical staff. NEMT vehicles are vans and sedans driven by CPR and first-aid trained drivers. If a rider becomes unstable during a DayLight trip, the driver calls 911.

We provide wheelchair transportation, ambulatory medical transportation, gurney and stretcher transport, recurring dialysis rides, hospital discharge transport, senior transportation, VA and veterans transportation, adult day health and PACE program rides, and long-distance medical transport to Los Angeles, Orange County, and Imperial Valley.
What is wheelchair transportation?
Wheelchair transportation means the rider stays in a wheelchair during the entire trip. Our vans have certified ramps, four Q-straint tie-downs that secure the chair frame to the vehicle floor, and a separate lap belt and shoulder harness for the rider. Manual chairs, power chairs, scooters, and bariatric chairs are all accommodated.
What is ambulatory medical transportation?
Ambulatory medical transportation is for riders who can walk with or without a cane or walker and who can get in and out of a sedan or low-step van with light help from the driver. It is typically the most affordable service level.
What is gurney or stretcher transportation?
Gurney or stretcher transportation is for riders who cannot sit up safely for the trip. It uses a locking stretcher with four securement points, two trained attendants on every trip, and an oxygen-capable vehicle. Typical use cases include post-surgical transport, hospice transfers, and advanced illness.
Do you provide dialysis transportation?
Yes. Recurring dialysis rides to Fresenius Kidney Care (Fletcher Parkway, Balboa), Kaiser Permanente RAI, DaVita East County, DaVita Chula Vista, DaVita Spring Valley, and Satellite Healthcare are one of our core services. We assign consistent drivers and lock in the schedule across the month.

Booking
How do I book a ride with DayLight?
Call our dispatch line at (619) 642-4000 for the fastest confirmation. You can also use the online booking wizard on this site. For recurring dialysis or weekly appointments, one call sets up the full standing schedule.
How far in advance should I book a ride?
For non-urgent rides, 24 hours is ideal. 48 to 72 hours is preferred when using a Medi-Cal or Medicare Advantage broker. Same-day rides are accepted whenever dispatch availability allows.
Can I book a same-day ride?
Yes. Call dispatch directly for the fastest same-day confirmation. Availability depends on fleet load. We tell you upfront if we cannot stage a vehicle.
Can I book rides online?
Yes. The online booking wizard collects pickup, drop-off, date and time, service level, rider details, and insurance or payment method. Dispatch calls to confirm the pickup window.
What information do you need to book?
Rider name and phone. Pickup address. Drop-off address or facility. Preferred pickup time. Service level (wheelchair, ambulatory, gurney). Insurance plan or payment method. Any special needs like oxygen, companion rider, or a specific language preference.
How do I set up a recurring dialysis schedule?
Call dispatch with the clinic name, treatment days (for example Monday, Wednesday, Friday), and the preferred pickup time. We lock in the full month of rides, assign a consistent driver, and coordinate with the clinic on return pickup windows.
Can I change or cancel a ride?
Yes. Call dispatch as soon as you know. Changes are free when made more than 2 hours before pickup. Last-minute cancellations may incur a fee depending on the service level.
Will the same driver show up every recurring trip?
Consistent driver assignment is our default for recurring rides. Occasionally illness or schedule changes require a substitute; you will hear from us first.
Can I book a round trip?
Yes. Tell dispatch whether you want the driver to wait at the appointment (wait-and-return) or to return at a confirmed pickup time. Short appointments under 30 minutes are usually wait-and-return; longer appointments schedule a return pickup.
Can a caregiver ride along?
Yes. One family member or caregiver is always welcome. Tell dispatch at booking so we reserve seating.
Insurance & Payment
Do you accept Medi-Cal?
Yes. We coordinate Medi-Cal non-emergency medical transportation through approved broker networks including American Logistics (Molina), Modivcare, MTM, and plan-direct contracts with Community Health Group, Health Net, Kaiser Medi-Cal, and Blue Shield Promise.
Do you accept Medicare Advantage?
Yes, for Medicare Advantage plans that include a supplemental transportation benefit. We work with multiple MA plan transportation networks. Check your Evidence of Coverage or call your plan to confirm your ride limits and eligible destinations.
Does Original Medicare cover medical transportation?
Usually no. Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not routinely cover non-emergency medical transportation. Medicare Advantage plans often do, through a supplemental benefit.
Do you accept VA Community Care?
Yes. Veterans with VA Community Care Network transportation authorizations can use DayLight. Share the authorization details at booking and we handle the trip documentation and billing.
Do you offer private pay?
Yes. Private pay is always an option. We quote transparent flat base plus per-mile pricing so the cost is predictable. Credit cards, debit cards, and ACH (for facility partners) are accepted.
What if my insurance denies coverage for a specific trip?
You have options. Ask the clinic to re-document medical necessity, file a grievance with your plan, or book DayLight as private pay and handle reimbursement separately. We can help walk through the process.
Pricing
How much does a medical transport ride cost?
Private-pay pricing depends on the service level and distance. Ambulatory rides typically start around $65 base (10 miles) plus $2.50 per additional mile. Wheelchair rides typically start around $95 base plus $3.50 per mile. Gurney rides typically start around $195 base plus $5 per mile. Always call for a specific quote.
Is there an after-hours surcharge?
After-hours or weekend rides may add a $25 to $75 surcharge depending on the service level and the time requested. Dispatch quotes the total before dispatching the vehicle.
Do you offer a discount for recurring rides?
Yes. Recurring weekly rides, especially dialysis, qualify for volume pricing. Facility partners who book three or more regular patients get a dedicated rate card.
Do you charge for waiting time at an appointment?
Short waits under 30 minutes are usually included. Longer waits are billed at an hourly rate that we confirm before dispatching. If the appointment is long, we often schedule a return pickup instead.
Do you tip the driver?
