Not every appointment is in San Diego County. Sub-specialty care at UCLA, City of Hope, UC Irvine, USC, Cedars-Sinai, or in the Inland Empire often requires a three to four hour drive each way. Long-distance medical transport is planned differently than a local ride.
Planning the trip
Long-distance trips are quoted and planned in advance. We review the appointment time, the destination facility, the rider’s mobility level, oxygen needs, positioning requirements, and whether a family caregiver will ride along. The quote reflects mileage, driver time, any required breaks, and the return trip if scheduled.
Comfort stops
For ambulatory riders, we plan bathroom and stretch breaks - typically one stop per 90 minutes. For gurney trips, we plan positioning check-ins and temperature management for the longer drive.
Coordination with the destination
We call the destination facility on arrival so admission is ready. For hospital-to-hospital transfers, we work with the receiving facility on arrival timing and transfer paperwork.
Insurance and payment
Medi-Cal can sometimes cover long-distance trips when the care is medically necessary and not available locally. Authorization is required in advance. Medicare Advantage plans with a transportation benefit may cover part of the ride within plan limits. VA Community Care covers veteran specialty trips when authorized. Private pay is straightforward and we quote up front.
