San Diego County is home to a large veteran population, and VA facilities here handle primary care, specialty care, mental health, and surgery. Getting to those appointments matters. This guide explains how VA Community Care authorized transportation works, which facilities DayLight serves, and what veterans and their families should expect.

The main VA facilities we serve

The hub of VA care in San Diego is the VA San Diego Healthcare System on La Jolla Village Drive. Outpatient clinics include the Mission Valley OPC, the Chula Vista OPC, the Kearny Mesa CBOC, and the Oceanside CBOC. DayLight drives to every one of these regularly.

Veterans also use DayLight for VA Community Care Network appointments - specialty care at Scripps, UCSD, Sharp, Kaiser, or a private practice, authorized through CCN and billed back to the VA.

How VA Community Care authorization works

When a veteran’s VA provider determines that a Community Care appointment is appropriate, transportation can be part of the authorization. The veteran or a VA care coordinator shares the authorization details with DayLight at booking, and we handle the trip documentation and billing back to the VA network.

Veterans who are not using CCN transportation can still book with DayLight as a private-pay rider, through other insurance, or via Medi-Cal if dually enrolled.

Wheelchair and gurney for veterans

VA patients may require wheelchair or gurney transport depending on mobility. DayLight handles all three service levels. For a veteran coming out of surgery or an extended inpatient stay, gurney service is common. For a routine primary care visit, ambulatory is usually correct. We ask at booking and match the vehicle.

Round-trip planning

Most VA appointments are round trips. Tell dispatch the expected appointment length, or ask us to wait if the appointment is short. For longer specialty appointments, we usually drop off and return at a confirmed pickup time, rather than waiting in the parking lot.
